Puffin is a St Ayles skiff. What on earth is a St Ayles skiff I hear you mumble? These skiffs are hand built from a kit developed by Iain Oughtred and Jordan Boats for the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther. Such was the success of this kit that the Scottish Coastal Rowing Association was born in October 2009 and communities around Scotland started buying kits with the aim of rowing with one another and racing at regattas.
“The kit design for the St Ayles has been thought through from the outset to produce a beautiful and comparatively easy boat that can be built by people with little or boat building experience. What is required is patience, and a reasonable degree of practical ability.”
The real beauty of these kits is the way they have brought communities together to build these boats and then link in with like-minded people all over the country. With over 70 clubs in Scotland alone, there are now St Ayles skiffs in the USA, Canada, Australia, Tasmania and The Netherlands some of whom journeyed to Ullapool for the first ever St Ayles World Championships in 2013 (next one 2016). Not bad for just a few years!
